Sun3 versions of SunOS will not work on sun2 architecture. While many
of the devices are similar or identical, sun3 SunOS never had to grok
multibus, but it's probably the 68020/68010 divide which is the real
killer. It would probably be possible to write one OS which would work on
either one, but they didn't, so sun3 SunOS is expecting 68020 instructions,
68020-style trap frames, etc. (And then there's sun3x SunOS, specialized
for the 68030-based Sun-3's, although I think the big differentiator there
was different MMU hardware -- NetBSD manages to have a unified kernel for
both sun3 and sun3x.)

You can get a wide variety of sun2 SunOS tapeimages at
www.siliconsamsara.org/tapeimages.
