That does sound exactly like our little venture with-and-against SGI and
SDRC here - IDEAS running 32-bit only, giving terrible performance on
64bit (real) machines, makes wintendo-boxes seem fast, etc, etc, etc...
The performance on the applications is ALWAYS up to the developers. If
they focus on one platform at one time, and just port the application in
the old quick-and-dirty style, it's not going to have any remarkable
performance. That's how it is.
Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt, etc.

Worst of all is that the "PeeCee-weenies" often believe in Balmore and
Gates to 100% when they states that "Windoze replaces Unix-boxes more
and more". If they believe in such crap, how bad will Mickeysoft look
when things go rambling?
Ofcourse, the suits don't care. They've got free meals and tickets to
ballgames when they took that Mickeysoft salesdroid seriously. Why would
the admins think it was a bad move? All-in-all, it was cheaper licenses,
software and hardware. That MUST have been better?
:-)
I've seen such attempts a couple of years ago, when Windows NT4 hit the
market with all the bells and whistles. Sure, every "old unix-server"
was on it's way out, it was told. Sure, some machine or another got
kicked in the nuts cause of this, but today there's no evidence
whatsoever of this marketing plot. Unix-vendors sells machines like
candy to kids in a candystore.
Not that Windoze has anything to do with this discussion, but for some
unexplainable reason, I find that x86 = Windoze.
