  That's the one.

  Unfortunately not.  If you want to put together a kickass serial
terminal with your VRE01, get a VT1000.  It's an X terminal but it has
two serial ports and allows you to start terminal emulators on both of
them.  I use mine (with my VRE01) exclusively for that purpose
nowadays; it's not even connected to the network.
