For my money, $300 for RealSoft3d is a better investment.  It runs on Irix, and
they've pledged to support Irix for the forseable future - since it is such an
easy port.  It also does character animation, particles, has a bunch of
plugins, has a very nice shader language and plugin, and is gaining momentum. 
Since it is a 'beta' they'll also upgrade you to the full release for *free* if
you contribute to testing.  Gonna buy my copy after next payday...
