You should be able to find a suitable E4500 on the used market to do this.
I'm guessing you're using single processor Intel boxes, which may not be a
safe assumption. 

I got a pair of 4x400MHz 4GB E4500s for $30k a couple of months ago. That
would give you 8 400MHz/8MB CPUs, 4 ethernets, 4 SCSI channels (which
would each take up to 15 drives if you're not worried about bus
saturation)... not a bad system. Get three such systems and you've got 12
CPUs etc... for $45k or so. 

Just a thought. There are other more distributed ways to do it (E420,
V280, etc...).
