[rescue] I'm not an EE Q - clarification

I used to work with an electrician who would *lick*his*finger* and
*then* stick it into a light socket to test it. He was somewhat aged; I
guess he was somewhat calloused??

As for 9v batteries, there is some other easy way? (Without going to the
basement and getting the meter?)
