Too much stuff (GNU stuff, especially) depends on features and
peculiarities of GNU make.

Not really... I keep sun make around (as "sun.make") for stuff like
IPFilter, that requires it instead of GNU make.

Or, keep sun make as "make", and make GNU make "gmake".
