Doped down? I only know of one ADD medication
that isn't a strong stimulant. I know of three
that are amphetamines: Ritalin, Dexadrine,
and Adderall. The odd thing is, stimulants
are usually effective in treating 5 of the
six types of ADD/ADHD.
It makes sense when you think about the fact
that the cause of those 5 types is the brain's
frontal lobe being asleep at the wheel.
This is as good as proven, thanks to PET* scans.
<FWIW, my wife is a special ed teacher on hiatus, and is not a doctor - but
she DID teach in a private school geared tword teaching differently enabled
kids i.e. ADD kids, ants-in-the-pants kids. Her kids ranged from genuine
nice, but misunderstood kids to .. a real horror show of a child. I
digress.
She claimed that you could tell those children who were "ADD" (whatever that
means) from those who were not by giving them Ritalin, Dexadrine or
Adderall. Kids who were not, pepped up and were worse. Kids who were ..
calmed down.
Personel experience, my kid was diagnosed ADD in the 4th grade. The school
insisted, my wife agreed that it could do no harm, and we tried Adderall.
And it worked. Grades improved, social skills improved. During the 6
months we worked with him, got him to think different, think smarter etc.
Tword the end he wasn't taking any at all, and we _knew_ it was time to cut
him off when sugar pills had the same affect on him as his Adderall.
Of course, NOW (even as he goes into the 9th grade, he's, per state law, in
Special Ed. Doesn't mean much, we have to meet with his Special Education
team yearly at the beginning of term, he's 'mainstreamed'.>
