actually, we used to do this at Lucent. the developers had really slow(ish)
sparc boxes on their desks and had access to the source via CVS. then when
a build needed to be done the buildmaster (this guy's whole job was to build
the product, and also to dump it to tape and distribute it to the customers)
would check out the tree and do a build on the build machine. 690MP with a
ton of memory and quad SM41s. monsterous at the time. now this was a huge
piece of software that only worked in conjunction with a phone switch, so it
wasn't really something they could test on their workstations anyway, but
still, it is quite possible to build such a setup.
