I've generally had good luck with GNU tools and MIPSpro.  GTK+ was also great,
as was GTKGLArea.  Other tools could be a real pain though (like Mozilla,
certain GNOME pieces, etc).  I don't care for GCC on Mips more than 
absolutely nescesarry.
