Indeed there are and I believe they're quite widely used.

Indeed. Since there's a very good ghance of a ground loop, it looks
like (and forgive me if this would be in a nearby fine manual), do you
connect the shield only at one end or is there some other curious setup
there that I haven't noticed?

Apart from galvanic and frequencies that are just right.

But, indeed, cheapness is probably the reason you see more UTP than STP
around. As usual.
