Another goofy memory idea:  take a box the size of a cdrom, fill it with
the biggest, cheapest ram you can find, stick an IDE/SCSI interface on it.
Maybe even run some kind of low power battery backup/refresh circuit so
that the sucker is nonvolatile.  I'll bet you could physically fit several
GB, and it would be one _fast_ drive.

Not really practical anymore with 64 bit CPUs and their huge address space,
I guess.
