The deal with the gimp, and the libraries it depends on, is that there are
$bigCompanies with a vested interest in making it work on Irix.  These range
from the maintainers of Film Gimp (Rhythm & Hues, among others), which is 
really best on Irix (because of SGI supporting 16bit graphics), to the 
company using it as the paint module for it's high end compositing (I want
to say it is Silicon Grail, but I can't find online references.  I heard 
about it in a trade article discussing the demise of 3rd party painting 
programs).  Grr.  Sometimes it would be really handy if google allowed 
booleans.
