ok, so i swapped the known working memory with the unsure memory and it
wouldn't boot.  so i put the old memory back in.  now i won't boot with
that memory either.  WTF!

ok, so i'm going to pull call the cards out of it and try over.

it had actually booted after pulling the new mem cards out, came all the way
up and hung looking for it's NIS server.

i hope i didn't kill it.

if all else fails, i do have a set of replacement planer boards for the thing.
