I've had Blackbox work fantastically with 8bit screens, you just 
have to pick themes with solid colors. When I last installed 
Blackbox it had maybe 4 or 5 themes that looked great on my 
SS2/GX. Too much dithering from gradients and background pics 
make it look awful. It's my favorite WM by far, and you can 
integrate it with KDE nice like. Too bad it doesn't seem to be 
developed anymore and Themes.org lost all the good themes for 
BB.
