They were most likely compiled without optimization and with lots and lots
and LOTS of debugging information.  When I built it on my God In A Box(tm)
Alpha, it took 4 hours to build out of the box, but when I turned off the
debugging, it took about 30 minutes.  Now just don't ask me to remember
how I turned off debugging...that was many many moons ago.
