[rescue] mesg: cannot change mode

"su username" or "su - username"? If it's with the "-" then it might be
something in the /etc/profile, user's .profile or whatever login script
runs for that user.

Apparently there's some kind of problem in HP-UX with a "mesg" command
in one of the login files. Thought you might have that here, too.
