Don't fool yourself. The junkyards/scrapheaps have always been salted. I 
forget where I read it, but I recall that the experts are told of the problem 
in advance and suggest 2 or 3 ways that they would solve it and the junkyard 
is miraculously made to contain the necessary material.

Check google looking for "junkyard wars nerds" to see the page (if it's still 
there, I can't resolve it right now) for the NERDS (the American team that 
participated in the British version). They talk about getting the endless 
supply of little things by going up to a wall and saying "I wish I had ..."

The earlier comment about the tone of the British show being better was 
definitely true. I can't pin it down but it has something to do with the 
contestants taking themselves less seriously and, at the same time, not 
forcing the "laugh at ourselves" kind of stuff.
