Not sure on that router, but I run a few toy rs6K boxes, though.

Hit a carriage return at a number of 260 or 262 (forget which, offhand).
That will cause the serial port 1 to poll you.

You may have to pull any existing video cards, although some boxes may
ask you if you want to change to the serial port, and note that in nvram.

The first time up, you may want to pull the battery plug for an hour and
let the nvram clear. Mine work better that way, if I have changed things,
or am trying to do a complete overwrite install off cd.

> Everything I have tried yeilds the same output on the attached display:
> absolutely nothing.

Hey, been there, done that..... Remove the display, remove the keyboard
and mouse, remove the internal video card. Hook up a 9600/8/n/1 terminal
on serial port 1 with a null modem cable (e.g., my vt320 uses a DEC mmj
cable to a 25 pin female dongle that nulls).

What numbers exactly. If it cycles through the floppy/HD/CD devices
continuously, then it is stuck waiting for a bootable drive. Insert
AIX boot cd into a cdrom and it should boot that, at that point in time.
Put the keyswitch in service mode first, to boot, and then later it will
ask you to put it into normal mode. Usually press 1 to accept the serial
terminal at that point, then it should come up in a menu asking for which
device to boot.

Typical boot cycle numbers are 253/291/260/262 or close to that, cyclically.
That means it is polling the devices on the scsi bus and the ethernet
looking
for something to boot.

If it is cycling between boot devices, it can't find anything to boot.
Find a boot cd and let it boot that to start up and then reinstall or
run a maintenance mode single user boot to check it out or reset root
passwd, etc.

> Any thoughts? Can I add a frame buffer, maybe? Anyone have the magical,
> mystical, (mythical?) configuration diskette mentioned in the manuals
> I've found?

Find an AIX cd and boot that. Pull any video cards if there are any,
and then let the nvram clear for an hour and try again. It should come
up on a serial terminal (use a real terminal or kermit, everything else
is problematic in my hands).

That is all I can think of, offhand. My cdromdrive was bad, so on
boot it cycled forever trying to find something. When I put a good
cdrom drive on, they came up fine off cd and serial ports.

Fun when folks drop things....

The BA350 does not have rack brackets, per se. It uses a shelf bracket
pair and then slides in on the shelf. I had some of the brackets from
a storageworks storage refrigerator thingy I stripped, but they are gone
now. I just stack mine on a shelf or on top of the cpu box, anymore.
3 of them stack pretty well, but 4 might be a problem unless you used
rubber sheeting to keep them from sliding.

There is a ba350ug.pdf from DEC that has all the info on the critters,
including the mystical magical internal jumpering you need to pay
attention to. If you can't find it, or Bill doesn't have it somehwere
on the rescue archives, holler and I will bounce it your way.

i think it's a local thing. PO, UPS, FedEx, even the estemed BAX manage to
drop stuff en route to my place. i never had so much trouble as i have had
since i moved to allentown. glad i'm leaving soon.

i'm gonna need 5, until i find more SCSI cards for my NetApp, then of course
i'll need more. :)

i need to hit the one surplus place in laurel and see if they still have the
storageworks rack i saw last time i was there. something like 6 or 7
shelves
in a half-rack, with what looked like enough room for the NetApp without
having
to remove shelves. of course i didn't have the NetApp last time i was there
so this is all going by my fuzzy memory. :)

but that doesn't mean i don't want BA350 boxes with rack stuffs. if anyone
has
any spare mounting kits for the 350, i'm interested.

I am home today with my son (school is closed, teachers union having a
conference in Atlantic City!), so I grabbed my Elph digital camera, snapped
a few quick shots, and dropped them on my SS/5-170.

The link is http://n2vip.dyndns.org/~ken/office.html - but beware, these are
hanging off my DSL line, 128Kb/sec, and are *big* (600K+)...

The room is in rough shape, and sheer sloth let it get to this point...

If you can't get them, let me know, and I'll put them someplace with better
connectivity...

Enjoy (and be kind ;^),

Dang, some folks have all the drives in the world.....(:+}}...

I can hang about a bakers dozen off a VAX, but 30 and more drives? Yikes!
Lessee... at 2/4/9 giggies each x 6 or 7 per box x 5 boxes.... Wow!
That would be quite a playpen fer sure!

Probably a bit more than my lowly little MVII critter could handle.....

Thanks... there's a couple promising-sounding things in there.

This particular box is a 6611 router, but appears to have innards very
similar to the 7011-250 that I also have (that also doesn't work...).
There's no video in it anyway and I have been trying a VT100 with a
straight-through cable or a linux laptop and a null modem cable. Do I
need a null modem cable if I use a real VT100? If I try the laptop
instead, I'll see if kermit is any more helpful. I've used minicom to
connect to other linux boxes, Cisco routers, switches and our
house-sixed UPS.

The numbers on the front indicate that the box is healthy. When the key
is set to normal, it ends in a c67 I think. That means that it's
running, but the configuration is different from what it expects. In
service mode it ends up with a c99 which means all tests completed.
(This is all, of course, all newly-aquired knowledge that may or may not
be accurate. ;) )

I'll try pulling the battery and see if that gets it to display
something, *anything* on the terminal.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll keep you "posted."

Subject: [rescue] Odd DNS problem with Solaris 8
Reply-To: rescue at sunhelp.org

Hi All,

Got a weird one here. I have a Laptop running Solaris 8 that I use as my
upstairs surf and email machine. Almost everytime I surf the web with it I
get
this annoying issue, I'll visit a web site page, it loads fine, I'll click
on a
link to another page within the same website and I'll get a DNS error, page
cannot be found thing in my browser window. hit refresh, the page comes
right
up. this happens about 60% of the time while on any given web site. If I
click
a link outside that site the page ALWAYS come up fine.

For example, I'll visit www.foo.com, page loads great, if I click on the
link
to www.foo.com/newds/ I get the DNS error 60% of the time. this is very
annoying while I am surfing eBay or one of the message boards for model
airplanes where you spend a lot of time within a specific site.

I have tried using different nameservers, I have checked my nsswitch.conf
file
what else may I be missing? The OS is also patched to ~sept 15 or so's patch
level.

TIA

Mike N

Yes. Also be aware that smit sometimes sucks on terminal mode with
what might be broken termcap entries. It probably favors IBM terminals.
(obvious?)

Use straight through on laptop, null on direct terminal.

let me guess. netscape. you can try turning nscd off, but that hasn't
proven
itself to be the end all solution to me yet.

<P><FONT SIZE=3D2>Thanks... there's a couple promising-sounding things =
in there.</FONT>
</P>

<P><FONT SIZE=3D2>This particular box is a 6611 router, but appears to =
have innards very</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>similar to the 7011-250 that I also have (that also =
doesn't work...).</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>There's no video in it anyway and I have been trying =
a VT100 with a</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>straight-through cable or a linux laptop and a null =
modem cable. Do I</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>need a null modem cable if I use a real VT100? If I =
try the laptop</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>instead, I'll see if kermit is any more helpful. =
I've used minicom to</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>connect to other linux boxes, Cisco routers, =
switches and our</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>house-sixed UPS.</FONT>
</P>

<P><FONT SIZE=3D2>The numbers on the front indicate that the box is =
healthy. When the key</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>is set to normal, it ends in a c67 I think. That =
means that it's</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>running, but the configuration is different from =
what it expects. In</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>service mode it ends up with a c99 which means all =
tests completed.</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>(This is all, of course, all newly-aquired knowledge =
that may or may not</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>be accurate. ;) )</FONT>
</P>

<P><FONT SIZE=3D2>I'll try pulling the battery and see if that gets it =
to display</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>something, *anything* on the terminal.</FONT>
</P>

<P><FONT SIZE=3D2>Thanks for the ideas, I'll keep you =
"posted."</FONT>

<P><FONT SIZE=3D2>Hi All,</FONT>
</P>

<P><FONT SIZE=3D2>Got a weird one here. I have a Laptop running Solaris =
8 that I use as my</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>upstairs surf and email machine. Almost everytime I =
surf the web with it I get</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>this annoying issue, I'll visit a web site page, it =
loads fine, I'll click on a</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>link to another page within the same website and =
I'll get a DNS error, page</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>cannot be found thing in my browser window. hit =
refresh, the page comes right</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>up. this happens about 60% of the time while on any =
given web site. If I click</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>a link outside that site the page ALWAYS come up =
fine.</FONT>
</P>

<P><FONT SIZE=3D2>For example, I'll visit www.foo.com, page loads =
great, if I click on the link</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>to www.foo.com/newds/ I get the DNS error 60% of the =
time. this is very</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>annoying while I am surfing eBay or one of the =
message boards for model</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>airplanes where you spend a lot of time within a =
specific site.</FONT>
</P>

<P><FONT SIZE=3D2>I have tried using different nameservers, I have =
checked my nsswitch.conf file</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>what else may I be missing? The OS is also patched =
to ~sept 15 or so's patch</FONT>

<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>> straight-through cable or a linux laptop and a =
null modem cable. Do I</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>> need a null modem cable if I use a real =

<P><FONT SIZE=3D2>Yes.  Also be aware that smit sometimes sucks on =

<P><FONT SIZE=3D2>> The numbers on the front indicate that the box =

That means that it's</FONT>

from what it expects. In</FONT>
<BR><FONT SIZE=3D2>> service mode it ends up with a c99 which means =
