Hmm... i'm going to check mine when I get home then. I've not noticed any
of my 5.25" drives getting anywhere near as warm as my 3.5" SCSI's do.
OK, so the 811 case does have a small fan at the back, but even so..
anyway... just stumbled accross this while looking for the power
consumption figure for them...

My Fujitsu 9Gb's (I have 3 in a raid cage) get warm even with an 80mm fan
in the front of the cage. I have a 4Gb variant in my desktop at home, and
that has 2 40mm fans mounted on the bottom to keep it cool.
anyway..
it's 11mS seek time, 5400rpm
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/scsi/st410800n.html
and they drink about 30 watts
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/specs/scsi/st410800n.html
having just looked up the drives I have in the server at home...
keep:/proc/scsi# cat scsi
Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: SEAGATE Model: ST36530N Rev: 1498
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 01 Lun: 00
Vendor: SEAGATE Model: ST34520N Rev: 1444
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
it seems that they burn about 12-15 watts..
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/specs/scsi/st34520n.html
so there's roughly a 1/3rd to 1/2 of the power dissipation in a much much
much much smaller box - hence the temperature they reach.
in the home desktop..
nifoc:~# cat /proc/scsi/scsi

Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 00 Lun: 00

ok.. well, i know that those 3.5" drive definately need the cooling. the
chippery on them get's /really/ hot. maybe its the size rather than the
actual power used.
i'll have a look at my Elite 9's later. it may be that they just cool off
much easier due to their size .. 30W for a brick that big isnt really a
lot.
