very good (and short) explination of why linux is slower than NetBSD on the
older (sun4c anyway) hardware.

In My Not So Humble Opinion: i think NetBSD will always stomp the crap out of
Linux if performance and stability.  why?  look at it this way: BSD has been
around for a VERY long time, and has been fine-tuned repeatedly.  Linux just
doesn't have the age and the fine-tuning that comes with it.  Linux has done
wonders for the publicity of UNIX, but if it had never gotten itself into the
public eye i don't think it would be nearly as popular as it is since everyone
would have chosen *BSD to run on.  </IMNSHO>
