I have my own box.  It is at home, on a ppp connection.  I spend most of
my time on campus (I'm leaving for it in 20 minutes, won't get back till
6:30PM).  Thus, I prefer an email system that can be used anywhere, and
which isn't web based.  Further, the department requires that we use are
department email addresses for getting stuff from professors (.forward
works, but isn't particularly encouraged), so I though it made sense to
use pine over a ssh (or telnet) connection to cs department as my main
email system. At least until I can afford to colocate a box of my own.
