I'm just glad that you all took the time to answer!  Thanks Patrick, 
Steve, Kurt, and Ed.  Since I am the only user on this machine(except 
for a colleague, who logs on at a predictable time), I just added 
localhost to the xhost file.  Worked like a charm.  Funnily enough, I 
was able to fire up ArcView before without any hassle. The only 
change I've made to that box was the Installation of the Forte suite. 
Go figure.
