I can vouch for this.  However, the big gain in interactive performance
VNC offers has little to do with bandwidth and much to do with latency.
The VNC protocol is much less "chatty" than X and gives better performance
on links with high latency (modems, wireless, etc) even though in some
cases it sends more data than X.
