The guys who wrote the "Unix Hater's Handbook" certainly thought so. The
book makes a compelling claim that X was brain dead and mentioned that the
Sun NeWS (Network Extensible Windows System?) was a lot better, but doomed.
The book, by the way, is pretty funny -- and makes some good points about
the Unix as it exisited in the late 80s to early 90s.
As for low-bandwidth X, the VNC guys say thier stuff will work over a modem
connection.
