I was quite surprised recently when a disk drive in my IPX died - the noise
level was reduced exponentially.

Well that depends on your cooling situation.

If you have plenty of cooling in an air conditioned room, then you can
safely wire a resistor in circuit with the fan input. If nto then you have
to do something less effective. Get some extremely thick, coarse, open cell
foam and mount it to the outside of the fan. Also make sure that the machine
is a vibration isolated as possible, and that the fan is solidly mounted
<less vibration = less noise>

Subject: [SunRescue] fan in IPX

Hello,
In the interests of keeping peace and harmony in my household (keeping my
wife happy), I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to reduce the noise
level of the fan inside an IPX. My computer room is starting to get quite
a lot of equipment in it and the noise level is getting a bit high.
Purchasing a quieter hard drive would help as well, but for now, I'm just
interested in quieting the fan.
Any ideas?
