IIRC, Compaq bought Dec for the professional services group there. The hardware only  drove the price up.

Remember CA was foing to buy EDS, PWC was going to buy HP, whatever that twisted logic was a few years ago...

Funny thing was they didn't really have to buy DEC at this late stage.

Compaq seemed to be doing just fine at both ends of the spectrum.

DEC may have been better off on its own, even though it did seem to be
shooting itself in both feet at the same time even more regularly than
ever before.
