Painless.  I use a boot floppy on mine, and a local ftp box, and it
is up in 15 minutes.  Over the net, it takes maybe an hour to install.

Fetch a special boot iso from:

  ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/misc/iso/alphacd.iso
                                           pmaxcd.iso
                                           sparccd.iso
                                           sun3cd.iso
                                           vaxcd.iso
                                           etc.

or write the boot floppies from:

  ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-1.5/alpha/installation/floppy/
  (somewhere close to there)

Boot either and be happy.
