Notice I said "as of", implying that that was the latest distro I'd
tried.  I finally shrugged my shoulder and kernel-hacked Solaris 7 to
run on the 4/690 and have been very happy with it, other than a couple
of tty-related problems I've been too lazy to track down.  (Well, that
and the power, which is why I'm building a Solaris 8 SS20 to replace
it...)

I'd tried Debian, older Red Hat, and (IIRC) SuSe after they'd finally
gotten Sparc support, and they all had issues.
