Hmm, there's a good definition of vector and scalar processing in the CF77 & 
Standard C Features and Optimization Workbook ("restricted to Cray employees 
and Cray customers licensed for UNICOS") Nifty, the compilers will even 
recognize when vectorization will produce incorrect results (because 
vectorization changes the order of instruction execution), and won't make 
vector code. Like an intelligent compiler... Looks like everyone should read 
Section (2) CRI System Architecture, (3) Vectorization, (10) Parallel 
Processing Concepts, and maybe some more...
