I'm really suspecting the disk on this. Others have shared the distrust of
Micropolis... used to have the Micropolis 1991 9gb full height disks that
died reliably within a week of the warranty expiring (luckily the first
two times were a week *before* expiry :-) ).

The number given in the install isn't the amount of space it ends up
taking up. I did a 4/01 full+oem install, added the default software
supplement kit and a couple of other little things, ran recommended
patches, and came up with the following:

Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s0 492351 43831 399285 10% /
/dev/dsk/c0t1d0s6 1504535 748633 695721 52% /usr
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s3 492351 212735 230381 49% /opt
/dev/dsk/c0t0d0s4 473287 73586 352373 18% /usr/local

1.02GB total. If you don't install the whole supplement, you can get in a
bit lighter. I did put 1GB of swap in (512MB on each of two disks) but
then I rarely have less than 512MB of swap these days.
