I know that pulling the frame buffer isn't supposed to matter, but on my
SS2, it refuses to boot to serial with the framebuffer in. I don't know
it if would boot to console with the framebuffer in because I don't have a
keyboard, mouse, or monitor handy. Now, in my case, it does display a few
lines to the serial port before it stops, and you don't seem to get
anything.

I don't know. Are you sure the serial cable is good and that it is the
right cable? If so, you might as well try pulling the frame buffer. It
shouldn't matter, but it did for mine, and it shouldn't hurt anything.
