Recent Thinkpads offer the same functionality via a dedicated
button...

I have basically the same setup. U10, Solaris 8 with Sun Media
Converter
going through Linksys KVM. Keyboard is standard PS2, mouse is
Logitech
wheel mouse. My wheel acts as a middle button. I didn't have
to do
anything to make it work.

Middle button works strangely with my SunPCi though. You can
hold down the
button and move the mouse slightly to scroll the screen in IE.
Almost
wheel-like. Works that way in both Windows 2000 & Windows NT.
