This could be incorrect kernel architecture on the disk. I got this
(or something similar) when I was moving a systems disk from a sun4c
machine to sun4m.

Did you use a system disk from another SPARCstation 10?

Rather than boot from another disk, can you boot from the Solaris
install CDROM?
