I once had my RS/6000 fail in an intensely weird way: when I tried to power
it on, the fans would begin to spin up for about a second, then everything
would shut off. Eventually I discovered that if I pulled my tape drive
out of the chassis, even if it was still connected, everything was fine.
Apparently the tape drive failed in such a way as to short power through
the case and the power supply decided it was safer to stay off. (Well,
that's my theory anyways.)
