it's from the contraction of the oil under cold conditions, (I cut my teeth 
on Paintball in Fairbanks, Alaska in college...).  We used to have to keep 
our paint warm inside our coats,  and our plastic splatmasters in insulated 
pockets or holsters so that the plastic wouldn't break when you fired them 
(not to mention that muzzle velocity goes down abruptly when CO2 gets colder 
than -25...)
