i run 8 on a sparc5 with 128M ram and it runs great.  i'd say if you had to
choose between versions, choose 2.5.1 or 8, skip all the others.

of course there is something to be said about not upgrading if you don't need
to, but that sounds like a good reason to me. :)

honestly, i think you will be quite pleased with 8.
