If i understand the american electric system it is 2-phase 110 V phase
to neutral ? and 240 V phase to phase ?
Measured with a standard volt-meter.

Take the pre-made converter !!!
Dont do your own if you arent 100% sure about your knowledge.

Which will only work if the sockets have different phase ie
you will get 0 V of difference ie both sockets is the same phase !
or 240 V if it is the same phase.
Strong admonition: i'm a repair tech with speciality
heating pumps (is that the proper term ?`) ie like a fridge.
Yesterday one of these babies had a bad short.
The main on-off switch was molten.
That switch is a standard 3-phase switch.
The total electric effect in the pump is 16Kw ie easily 12 Amps
at 220 V per phase.
The short was between two phases and the heat was big enough
to melt the insulation on some nearby wires.
So: in short doing electrical work without knowing your stuff is
asking for problems ie FIRES!!
