The hack I know of (and I can't reference the website, it's the one in
.au which has all the PROM images and such) also has a hack for getting 
2.6 and 7 to run on VME-based boxes like the 4/670, etc. 2.6 is going to 
be supported for a lot longer than 2.5.1 from Sun's perspective (based on
all the info I can acknolwedge.)  If there is a hack to get 8 running on
sun4c it would be similar, but I think they just dropped all the sun4c
platform code from the OS (just a hunch, I could be quite wrong.)
