I have the 386i docs at home so I will look at them tonight for you.  As a 
point of interest, when the system boots it displays a system ID.  Have you 
tried entering that at the password prompt as, the default root password is 
that system ID so if you are lucky someone may have reset it to that before 
decommissioning it.
