Unless you have a Enterprise server with multihomed domains you will have
to boot...even on the Enterprise server I assume you will have to
reboot in some form or other...this is the whole issue even with patching
the system's kernel is that it requires a reboot... However what I try to
do is only patch the systems on the network ones every 3 -6 months or when
security fixes need to be applied. The only unshedueled downtimes I allow
is when hardware fails even then only for a few minutes until my
system monitoring system starts beeping (done that to make shure it
pisses off the poeple who live ontop of my flat) so they call my mobile
and I have to go to my site or if I'm out of the country my sister has to
follow my instructions blindly and bring up one of the spare servers who
are configured to need just a IP number plus a script that starts the
service that is needed until I get back & can fix the system.
