well I just tried on a FreeBSD box (I hate BSD, i like much SySV! ;)

the commands should be:

route delete <destination>
route add <dest> <gateway>

instead of the '-f' option (flush) on BSD you have to do something this kind:

route flush [family]

if a 'route' command hangs while attempting to show current routing tables, try
to use a '-n' option (it suppresses all the attempts to translate numeric
output to symbolic)..
