Here's a good question:

I administrate a Sun E450 at work that is using an AIT-1 (Qualstar/Sony
SDX-300C with updated v4.07 firmware) for backups. (Solaris 2.6, 256meg of
ram [cheap bastards won't pay for more ] and a 47gig raid array).

The backup software being used is BudTool which works OK except that the
tape drive is not storing more than the "native" capacity of 25gig. This is
despite the hardware compression dip-switch being set "on" on the drive
itself. I checked the backup software and it functions the same regardless
of which logical device I set it to.
(/dev/rmt/2n, /2un, etc. - BTW there is no /2on which is compressed mode
according to docs.sun.com.)

How can I get this thing to compress? I've got a call into Qualstar but
I was wondering if anybody knows anything right off the bat that I can
check.

Sincerely,

Mike Hebel
