Today my Ultra 2 finally arrived, and before I set it up, which will be this
weekend it seems (I just got a rush project dumped on me at work :^( )
I wanted to pose a few questions that are not covered by the included
documentation:
Power - this is going into a home set-up, and I have a few 500
and 600 VA (watts?) UPSes, would one of these suffice to save
my new baby from *most* power problems? Do I *need* to get
a larger UPS for this beast?
Periperals - I plan on adding a modem, ext. drives, and a
postscript printer to this system, is it a bad idea to hook them
all up first, then power-up for the first time? (any advantage or
disadvantage?)
CD-Changer - I have a Pioneer 6 CD Changer (4x I think), what
do I need to have this be supported under Solaris 2.5.1, 7 or 8?
Software - The system includes a copy of Solaris 7 on CD-ROM,
but Solaris 2.5.1 was pre-loaded, should I ignore the 2.5.1
install and boot off the Solaris 7 CD-ROM and do a fresh install
from that? Also, would I be well advised to go right to Solaris 8?
I don't have a copy, but one could be gotten from Sun ($75).
BTW, am I entitled to current OS release while my system is
under warranty (this is a brand new system, not a refurb, and
has full warranty)?
Legacy SBUS cards - I would like to add some SBUS cards I have
on the shelf, are these known compatible with the Ultra 2:
SBUS SunPC (w/AMD 586/133 Mhz CPU) - for the
fun of it, not needed...
SBUS Fast SCSI/Ethernet card (10BaseT/SCSI-2) -
rather than adapt Wide SCSI to Narrow SCSI, why not
put narrow drives/tapes/on this controller?
SBUS TurboGX (for dual head operation - possible? I
already have a Creator card installed)
Thanks in advance, I'm used to playing with low-cost Suns (IPC -> SS/10),
but the possibility for damage here is much greater ($$$)...
