APC have a load calculator on their site, which includes most recent
Suns - I'm sure the Ultra 2 is listed

I'd keep it as simple as possible to start with.

Yes. If you have a tape drive handy, by all means back the system up
should you ever want to look at 2.5.1, but if you don't already have a
requirement for 2.5.1, 7 will serve you better.

There's no doubt about right to use solaris 8 - it's free of charge
for any system <= 8 CPUs.
