[SunRescue] Installing Solaris without cdrom

chris,
Sun SPARCStation Open Boot Proms are set (default) to boot from disk
at SCSI ID 3 ('boot disk'). You can force it to boot from the SCSI device
at SCSI ID 6 by typing 'boot cdrom' at the 'ok' prompt in the Forth monitor.
In most units 'cdrom' is the alias for the device c0t6d0s0. Older units
will require the longer version of the device (Sun 3?).
Sun uses SCSI ID 6 for its CDROM default. But there is nothing
sacred about SCSI ID 6. You can place any SCSI device there and use it if
it behaves as Solaris expects it to when called.
If you see an '>' after booting, type 'n' to get to the 'ok' prompt.
The OBP manual is at:

http://docs.sun.com/ab2/coll.216.1/OPENBOOTCMDREF/@Ab2TocView?Ab2Lang=C&Ab2E
nc=iso-8859-1&DwebQuery=Open+OR+Boot

Its good readin' for getting most SPARCStations off the ground...

.....My IPC has a 2GB HDD which I could connect to my Symbios controller
in my PC. But I'm not sure what you meant when you said
<< Set it to the correct ID (I think it's 6) and tell the boot prom
to boot prom to boot from the CDROM drive. >>

so long,
	chris

Thomas

I have successfully installed Solaris 7 on an IPC with no CDROM drive. If
you have an extra hard drive that will work in the UltraBook, you can use dd
to copy the entire install CD to the disk (use the classic for this part).
Set it to the correct ID (I think it's 6) and tell the boot prom to boot
prom
to boot from the CDROM drive. The UltraBook will see the hard drive as a
CDROM and the install should go as normal. This trick has been known to
work
with the larger removable drives, such as the SyJet and Jaz drives. I think
it's documented under the CDROM section of one of the FAQ's on sunhelp.
