I like your Idea No. 2, best, but would set it up something like.....

Section 1:  Overview, CPU/CHASSIS, Models by number/designation
Section 2:  VME Based Machines, with Systems, Boards, Jumpering, etc.
Section 3:  SBUS Machines
Section 4:  PCish things
Section 5:  Laptops
Section 6:  Things to know ahead of time (Hints and Kinks)
Section 7:  Things to know after the fact (The FAQ with Answers)
Section 8:  Appendices of tabular info, detailed board info and detailed
            misc info that does not fit anywhere else.  Put disks, keyboards,
            mice, monitors, drives, etc., here, if they are usable on more
            than one machine class or type.

.....a gargantuan task, for sure, but it will become the cannon of the
     future for those that follow.....
