My jumpable Plextor 12-speeds work great on all my Sun hardware to boot and
install Solaris/SunOS, not to mention *BSD. Where the problems occurs (which
was the problem the original poster was having IIRC) was that there are
problems installing Linux.

What happens to me is that the machine initially boots, and then in the
hardware discovery phase there's a complaint about the CD-ROM device. Can't
remember exactly, but something along the lines of "xxxx device detected,
changing to xxxx" and then the install hangs. I also see many instances of
the CD device, one at each SCSI ID except the HD.

If I shut down, unplug the Plextor, plug in my trusty old Sun 2X CD-ROM, and
do the exact same steps, the Linux install completes without incident. This
_always_ happens to me on 4c architecture machines, but I've seen it as well
on 4m machines.

Evil spirits, bad drugs, who knows. All I know is that if I'm installing
Linux on Sun hardware, I always use my Sun CD-ROM! <grin>

Steve

Hi!

The Plextors have a jumper called "block". It changes the blocksize
from 2048 to 512 (as needed by a Sun). My 12Plex and my 12/20Plex
both work ok on a Sun3/60, Sun3/80 or Sun3/470. I can even boot from
them!!!

Tschuess

Peter
