This is true, but the old golden rule was to set the second bit of the
first octet (indicating a "local" MAC address) and use the IP address for
the last octets.

This is less important when you are on a home LAN with half a dozen other
machines, but when you were part of an (unswitched) network with hundreds
of systems it was good practice. 

I did see a MAC address collision once between a pair of Suns using
improvised addresses, both were 8:0:20:c0:ff:ee.  This address being
mentioned in the Sun NVRAM FAQ probably helped.
