That's actually pretty easy to determine.  Get a decent HeNe laser (solid
state laser diodes don't have as good of a beam pattern) and shine it in
one end.  Shine the other end on a piece of white cardstock a couple
inches away.

It's hard to explain, but the difference is obvious when you try it.  MMF
has a "halo" effect of constructive and destructive interference.  SMF is
usually dimmer and has a cleaner profile.
